KS1 MULTI-SKILLS CIRCUIT

As part of National School Sports Week, a KS1 Multi-skills circuit took place at St Marie's Infant School for 60 Year 1 pupils. One class at a time took part in a circuit of activities, involving running, skipping, balance, agility and co-ordination. Four Year 10 Sports Leaders from Rugby High School helped to run this event, being responsible for a team each, guiding the children through all the activities and designing obstacle courses. At the end of each event they were also responsible for choosing two 'stars' from their teams, which proved to be very difficult! It was great to see the enthusiasm displayed by the children (and Sports Leaders!), as the children were busily involved in all the activities. This was a lovely afternoon enjoyed by all, which will hopefully be repeated next year.

NATIONAL SCHOOL SPORTS WEEK

National School Sports Week began on June 28th and involved numerous sporting events and cross-curricular activities during the week. All the cluster schools were involved in either their own or cluster events - a big thank you to all the staff who worked so hard in arranging all the activities and promoting sport within your schools.

TAG RUGBY TOURNAMENT

On a lovely warm and sunny afternoon on Wednesday, June 23rd, Boughton Leigh Junior School hosted a tag rugby tournament for their own and Newbold Riverside Primary's Year 5. Children were arranged into six mixed school teams and played a series of games. The event soon took on a competitive element with large numbers of tries being scored! The event was supported by Sports Leaders from Avon Valley School,  who refereed the matches. Well done to everyone who took part - for many this was their first taste of tag rugby competition.

TRI-GOLF COMPETITION

Newbold Riverside Primary School hosted a Tri-golf competition for the Avon Valley cluster on Wednesday, May 18th. 60 Year 4 children took part in the competition and were divided into 12 teams. They completed a tri-golf activity circuit with tasks based around putting and chipping skills. 12 sports leaders from Avon Valley School supported the teams and kept the scores. The event was throughly enjoyed by all and the weather was perfect for an afternoon of tri-golf! All the children received certificates and the winning team were presented with medals. A very big thank you to the sports leaders who were excellent and to all who supported this event. This competition will now hopefully become an annual event!

ORIENTEERING FESTIVAL

On Wednesday, May 12th two schools from the Avon Valley cluster joined together for an orienteering festival. This was the first time this event has taken place and provided 85 Year 3 pupils with an opportunity to develop their orienteering skills and teamwork. Initially, the children chose a partner, with both schools working together and then completed one task involving colour matching within the environment, followed by a mathematical problem solving challenge. The children all worked really enthusiastically with very good results! Well done to all those who took part and a thank you to everyone who helped to run this event. Due to its success this will now hopefully become an annual event!

MINI RED TENNIS COMPETITION

Three clusters joined together on March 18th and 25th to take part in our annual Mini Red Tennis competitions. Newbold Riverside Primary (Avon Valley cluster), Rokeby Primary and Our Lady's Catholic Primary (Rugby High cluster) and Abbots Farm Juniors and English Martyrs Catholic Primary(Ashlawn cluster) entered teams for both the Year 3/4 and 5/6 competitions. For many, this was their first experience of Mini Red tennis and it was great to see how quickly the children developed their skills and learned the rules! The competitions were thoroughly enjoyed and matches were all played with good team spirit!

Results:-

Year 3/4 - Overall winners = Abbots Farm Juniors

Cluster winners with qualification to area final in June = AV - Newbold Riverside Primary, RHS - Our Lady's Catholic Primary, Ashlawn - Abbots Farm Juniors

Year 5/6 - Overall winners = Rokeby Primary

Cluster winners with qualification to area final in June = AV - Newbold Riverside Primary, RHS - Rokeby Primary, Ashlawn - Abbots Farm Juniors

Thank you to all those who both took part and supported this event.

Year 1 and 2 Multi-Skills Festivals

In February, two Multi-Skills Festivals took place at Avon Valley School, involving 340 pupils from St Marie's Infants School, Brownsover Community Infants School, Boughton Leigh Infants School and Newbold Riverside Primary School.  The events included activities which challenged pupils co-ordination, jumping and throwing skills, with teams participating in a circuit of activities.  Following this, all teams took part in several relay races.  It was great to see so many children taking part in sport and the event was thoroughly enjoyed by all! Every child received a certificate and medals were awarded to team stars! Twenty one Year 9 Sports leaders from Avon Valley School helped at both events who were excellent. A special thank you to them for all their help in running the event and to the whole cluster for their attendance.

Gymnastics Competition

On December 3rd the Rugby High and Avon Valley clusters joined together, yet again, to put on our first KS2 gymnastics competition which was held at Avon Valley School.  The competition, for beginners, introduced them to performing individual routines in body management, floor and a vault.  Staff and pupils have worked hard over the last few weeks to practice the routines. The event was supported by Rugby High School, Lawrence Sheriff, Ashlawn and Avon Valley School sports leaders, most of whom are gymnasts and coaches from Rugby Gymnastics Club.

Thank you to the 3 schools - Newbold Riverside, Rokeby Primary and Bilton Junior who came to the competition.

Winning team - NEWBOLD RIVERSIDE

Year 5/6 Agility Challenge

On Thursday 12th November Avon Valley and Rugby High clusters joined together for a morning packed full of agility challenges based on the Sportshall Athletcis activities. 3 schools (Boughton Leigh Junior, Our Lady's and Newbold Riverside) participated in this event with 90 children able to come and have fun. Year 9 Leaders from Avon Valley supported this event and ran all the different stations - timing and keeping scores.

Well done to everyone who took part. It was a fantastic morning supported by Eddie and Adam from Sportshall Athletics. Certificates were given to every child that took part.

Results - 1st Place - Our Lady's (2) - 88 points, 2nd Place - Boughton Leigh Junior (5) - 86 points.

Young Leader training

Over 100 Year 5 students at Boughton Leigh Junior and Newbold Riverside received training last term to enable them to lead lunchtime activities for younger children. All students who took part in the training sessions will receive a certificate and will be actively engaged in leading youngsters in physical activity during this year.

Congratulations and well done to all.

Welcome back to the start of the new school year.

A particular welcome to Anne Jones who has taken over the role of PLT at Boughton Leigh Infant School.

As always we have a full programme of festivals, conferences and meetings planned and we start our festivals with the High 5 Netball festival on the 24th September. See our cluster calendar for the full timetable of events.
