SPORTS LEADERS

Over the past two weeks, including National School Sports Week, 50 Year 10 Rugby High School Leaders were kept extremely busy helping at a number of Primary events, involving several hundred children. The girls were able to put into practice their leadership skills developed this year through their PE leadership lessons. They helped with Bawnmore Infants whole school sponsored walk, Bilton Juniors Sports Day, a KS1 Tri-golf festival for Bawnmore Infants, Bilton Infants and Our Lady's Catholic Primary School and a Multi-skills circuit for St Marie's Infant School. Fortunately the weather stayed fine for all events, as the Sports Leaders took responsibility for teams, organising activities, keeping scores and choosing 'star participants'! It was wonderful to see so many children involved in sport and primary staff and parents were hugely impressed by the Sports Leaders. A very big thank you to all the girls - these events could not run without your help! Well done!

KS1 TRI-GOLF FESTIVAL

As part of National School Sports Week a cluster Tri-golf festival took place for KS1 at Rugby High School on Monday, June 28th. Bawnmore Infants, Bilton Infants and Our Lady's Catholic Primary School took part, which involved 100 children. The children were arranged into mixed school teams and 19 Sports Leaders from Rugby High School took charge of a team each - guiding them through all the activities. All the teams followed a circuit of ten activities, involving putting, chipping and target skills. For many, this was their first experience of tri-golf and it was lovely to see so much enthusiasm! Indeed it was extremely difficult for the Sports Leaders to choose their 'team stars'! A huge thank you to all the schools that took part and to the Sports Leaders who were fantastic!

NATIONAL SCHOOL SPORTS WEEK

National School Sports Week began on June 28th and involved numerous sporting events and cross-curricular activities during the week. All the cluster schools were involved in either their own or cluster events - a big thank you to all the staff who worked so hard in arranging all the activities and promoting sport within your schools.

SPONSORED WALK

On a beautiful warm and sunny morning on Wednesday, June 23rd, Bawnmore Infant School visited Rugby High School for a charity sponsored walk. This is the second time this event has taken place and hopefully will now become an annual event! The whole school were divided into year groups and each walked a mile, using the athletics track for guidance. Nine Sports Leaders from Rugby High School helped by tallying the scores each time the children passed checkpoints. It was lovely to see so many parents and siblings joining in too! Well done to all who took part, everyone walked a mile and a few children walked so quickly they managed two!

YOUNG LEADER TRAINING

15 Year 5/6 children from Our Lady's Catholic Primary School took part in the Sports Leaders UK Young Leader Award on Monday, June 21st. This proved to be a very busy day with the leaders being introduced to basic leadership skills - how to use space, equipment, arrange teams and create games for younger children. During the afternoon 35 Year 1 and 2 children participated in games designed and led by the leaders. There were lots of great ideas, with leaders putting their newly acquired skills into good practice! A special well done to Dominic who was the 'Star Leader' of the day and congratulations to all the leaders!

YEAR 5 GIFTED AND TALENTED DAY

On Friday, April 30th, 38 gifted and talented pupils from the Rugby High School and Bilton School clusters attended an extremely busy day of sports activities at Bilton School. The pupils were introduced to a variety of activities which were both mentally and physically challenging. They began with a cup stacking challenge and competition, followed by tennis, cricket and gymnastics sessions. Pupils were then presented with individual challenges before  participating in a basketball skills session and tournament. Well done to everyone who took part - this was a very busy, but enjoyable day and it was great to see so many enthusiastic pupils rising to the challenges! Some of the pupils who attended will now be invited to the Sports Partnership summer Academy.

RHS CLUSTER SUCCESS IN CHEERLEADING COMPETITION

April 14th turned out to be an extremely busy, but hugely successful day for the Rugby High cluster of schools. Four teams entered the County Cheerleading competition, which took place at North Leamington School, in their new dance theatre. Thirty eight teams from across the county took part in the competition which required a two minute pom dance and a cheer/chant. There were competitions for all key stages which involved boys and girls, with wonderful displays and a vast array of colourful poms! All the schools demonstrated huge support for one another which was lovely to see and extremely noisy to hear! The Rugby High cluster achieved fantastic results as follows:-

KS1 competition - Bawnmore Infants - 1st place for Eastern area and overall County winners

KS2 Year 3/4 competition - Rokeby - 1st place - County winners

KS3 competition - Rugby High School - 1st place for Eastern area

KS4 competition - Rugby High School - 1st place for Eastern area

Team Spirit Award - Rugby High School

Congratulations to you all! Thank you for all your hard work, which was clearly well worth it!

Fourteen sports leaders from Bilton School helped to run the event, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all!

YEAR 3/4 GYMNASTICS COMPETITION

On Thursday 3rd December the Rugby High and Avon Valley clusters joined together to host our first KS2 gymnastics competition which was held at Avon Valley School.  The competition, for beginners, introduced them to performing individual routines in body management, floor and a vault.  Staff and pupils have worked hard over the last few weeks to practice the routines. The event was supported by Rugby High School, Lawrence Sheriff, Ashlawn and Avon Valley School sports leaders, most of whom are gymnasts and coaches from Rugby Gymnastics Club and Daventry Phoenix Gymnastics Centre.  The leaders not only helped to run the competition and judge, but also demonstrated their own gymnastic skills in a display - thank you!

Thank you  and well done to the three schools - Newbold Riverside, Rokeby Primary and Bilton Junior who came to the competition.

Winning team - NEWBOLD RIVERSIDE

YEAR 6 GIFTED AND TALENTED DAY

On Thursday, October 15th gifted and talented pupils from the Rugby High School and Bilton School clusters attended a very full day of activities, centred around the five gifted and talented abilities. Although rather a damp day, this didn't spoil the fun as pupils were challenged through football tasks, a leadership challenge, tri-golf, street-surf, agility challenges, a sports quiz and a tag rugby tournament! A number of awards were presented throughout the day as pupils demonstrated gifted and talented performer competencies such as determination, positive attitude, creativeness and good teamwork skills. Pupils were divided into four teams and were involved in an overall team competition, an individual challenge competition and a tag rugby tournament. Everyone took part in all the activities with great effort and enthusiasm. A special well done to Matthew for winning the individual challenge, Team 1 for winning the tag rugby tournament - scoring nine tries! - and Team 2 who were overall winners!

GYMNASTICS COMPETITION

STEP INTO SPORT

Congratulations to Katherine Durkin from Rugby High School who has just achieved the Bronze Award for 50 hours of sports volunteering. The day will also involve a Tag Rugby Festival.

WELCOME BACK

Welcome back to the Rugby High School cluster of schools and a special welcome to two new PLT's - Lisa Osborne at Bilton Infant School and Alasdair Black at Rokeby Primary School.

The term has already got off to a busy start with all schools involved in planning sporting events and activities for this academic year. We are hoping to further develop the opportunities for pupils in our schools to participate in and enjoy sport, whether this be through school activities, club involvement, competitive or non-competitive sport or working as sports leaders. This is an exciting time for sports development, with all schools working hard to achieve the five hour offer:-

2 hours of curriculum PE (5-16yrs) + 3 hours further sport within the community (5-19yrs).
